Why we’re excited to be shortlisted for a Wales STEM Award

The POET Software team up for the award

Probe RTS, the parent company of POET Systems, has been shortlisted for an Innovation in STEM Award.

Sponsored by Cardiff Metropolitan University, the Wales STEM Awards recognises organisations for their dedication to making a difference in, and championing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) in Wales – including those creating an impact on the Welsh economy.

POET System’s Director, Philip Roberts, explains why this nomination means so much to the team:

“To be one of 55 companies shortlisted is a real achievement for both the team and the businesses we work with. This particular category recognises companies that have created and developed innovative STEM products and processes that have improved the organisation’s performance.

As a business that has been very vocal about the urgent need for a digital revolution in manufacturing, this is music to our ears.

We’re shortlisted alongside some impressive names; Afon Technology, Aparito, CanSense, Jellagen, and Marine Power Systems – all organisations we admire and respect for what they have achieved in Wales.

As Director at both Probe RTS and POET Systems in Bridgend, I’m committed to supporting manufacturers in analysing their data (the right data) and improving their productivity. If you’re not familiar with us, POET is a bespoke cloud-based software system designed to improve performance, save time, and reduce waste. Predominantly aimed at manufacturers, it provides detailed data about production processes, giving a complete view of operational performance in real-time.

Finalists 2023
Our software shines a very bright light on process and systems; there’s no hiding from it! As manufacturers, data is our most powerful weapon for change. In a nutshell, by using our software and acting on the results, our customers save time and money.

We’ve found that since Covid-19 and the general economic turbulence of the last few years, manufacturers have been spending more time looking at how they can future-proof their operations, increase the resilience of their supply chains, and digitalise areas where the most impact can be made. POET has been very much a part of this process. It has never been as important to take stock, innovate, and bring back self-reliance as a key driver to future success.

Welsh Government’s A manufacturing future for Wales: our journey to Wales 4.0 focuses on ensuring Wales remains a leading manufacturing nation. It sets out several priorities, including identifying that a prosperous economy requires a steady focus on resilience and a capacity for transformation. Wales needs outward-looking firms with positive innovation performance, good productivity levels and a workforce equipped with the skills for a changing world.

We believe we are perfectly placed to support this priority.

Our team is looking forward to the next 18 months as we continue to grow and evolve. This award nomination motivates us even further to continue driving the advancement of our technology, and we welcome this opportunity to further promote STEM excellence in Wales and beyond.”

All finalists from across the 13 categories will now be considered by an industry-leading panel of judges, with the winners being announced at the awards ceremony at the Mercure Holland House Hotel in Cardiff on 13th October.
